Are you a perfectionist who constantly sets high expectations for yourself? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us fall into the trap of believing that achieving more will lead to greater happiness. But often, the opposite is true—we end up feeling more stressed, less fulfilled, and disconnected from our true purpose. Here’s how you can break free from the pressure and start living a life aligned with your purpose.
The Perfectionism Trap: Expecting Too Much from Yourself
I used to be caught in the perfectionism trap, expecting too much from myself in every area of my life. Whether it was my relationships, work, or the non-profit organization I was building, I wanted to excel at everything. But instead of bringing me happiness, this relentless pursuit of perfection left me feeling empty and always striving for the next goal.
Living in Denmark, I was in a relationship, working full-time, and dedicating countless hours to a non-profit. I wanted to be perfect in all these roles, believing that doing so would satisfy my ego and prove my worth. And while I did my best, I often forgot to truly live and feel the present moment.
The Realization: Slowing Down and Embracing “Poco a Poco”
Looking back, I realize that I wasn’t really living my life—I was merely chasing the next thing on my to-do list. I was so focused on the future and achieving my goals that I lost sight of the present.
Today, I’ve learned to slow down and embrace the Spanish saying “poco a poco”—step by step. By taking life one step at a time, I’ve found a much more fulfilling way to live. I’m no longer just creating and pushing forward; I’m truly living in the moment.
I’ve also come to accept that not everything will work out as planned. When I let life unfold naturally, I often find that the universe presents me with opportunities that my limited mind couldn’t have anticipated. This openness to life’s surprises has been a blessing, allowing me to experience more joy and fulfillment.
Breaking Free from Societal Pressure
In today’s society, there’s immense pressure to fit into multiple roles—to be a good worker, a supportive partner, and to prioritize your own personal development. For me, this was particularly challenging. I had to learn to set boundaries, celebrate my successes, and accept that I’m not superhuman. I can’t do everything at once, and that’s okay.
When I started to appreciate what I have and live in the present, everything changed. My life became richer, more meaningful, and aligned with my true purpose.
